Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a branch of specialization within the dental and medical field. It began as a formal education program in 1971 at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Padjadjaran/Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital Bandung, with the establishment of the SLOS (Sekolah Lanjutan Oral Surgery / Advanced School of Oral Surgery). Based on the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 139/DIKTI/Kep/1984, the Oral Surgery Study Program in Indonesia was established, and from that point on, SLOS was transformed into the Specialist Dentist Education Program (PPDGS) in Oral Surgery. In line with its development, the College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery designated the graduate degree as Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Sp.BMM.). On March 28, 2011, an operational permit was issued by the Rector of Universitas Padjadjaran through Rector's Decree Number 5874/D/T/K-N/2011. To date (from 1971 to 2020), the Specialist Dentist Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (PPDGS BM) at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Padjadjaran, has produced a total of 196 graduates who are spread across Indonesia, working in both civilian and military government institutions as well as private entities.
The Specialist Dentist Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at FKG Unpad received an A accreditation in 2012 from the internal accreditation of the College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2019, it was again accredited A by the Independent Accreditation Agency for Higher Education in Health (LAM-PT Kes) No.0003/LAMPTKes/Akr/Spe/I/2019. In 2024, it once again received an Excellent accreditation from the Independent Accreditation Agency for Higher Education in Health (LAM-PT Kes) No.0004/LAM-PTKes/Akr/Spe/I/2024.
